glaciers are fascinating witnesses to the history of the earth. sources of terror and wonder, adventure and knowledge, they provide a better understanding of climate change and its challenges in the anthropocene. based on recent findings from the alps and around the world, this presentation explores the fascinating and disturbing evolution of glaciers on earth and highlights the importance of protecting these giants and the ecosystems that follow them.
jean-baptiste bosson works at the conservatoire d'espaces naturels de haute-savoie (asters) is an expert at the international union for conservation of nature (iucn), and was appointed in 2022 to the conseil national de la protection de la nature in france. he completed his phd on the evolution of small alpine glaciers at the university of lausanne in 2016. his research and scientific mediation activities focus on glaciers and the protection of high mountains worldwide. in particular, he coordinates theice&life project, which aims to collect new data and better protect the 210,000 glaciers on our planet.

it is the second time that green dreamer crow jochen mesle and his friend max kroneck link hundreds of kilometers of cycling with ski touring. in their 2018 adventure, ‘’ice and palms’’, we followed them on a 6 week, 1800km alpine crossing from their corner of bavarian swabia to nice and the mediterranean. the two friends love cycling, they love skiing, they love the mountains, and they wanted to do it again, with a dose of the unknown, of meeting new people and of adventure. this time they set off by train to thessaloniki, with their bikes, for a journey backwards through the balkans.

nature’s delight: the movements working to save some fun for future generations
the era of the anthropocene marks a critical turning point in the history of our planet, where human activities have become the driving force behind environmental changes. this brings up an enormous deal of challenges to our modern society. above all, it brings a sense of urgency that we cannot miss. our time left for “fun” might be shrinking due to this emergency, but the entertainment and tourism industries depend on it, and bring an enormous deal of economic vitality to entire cities or key regions.
how can we continue to enjoy entertainment and outdoor leisure while being cautious of our environmental footprint? for those in the event and tourism industry, it is literally vital to build a balance between providing enriching experiences and adopting sustainable practices.
